About

Tracy Bu is an American violinist currently based in Zurich, Switzerland.

She made her solo concerto debut at age 15 performing the second Wieniawski Violin Concerto with the Las Vegas Philharmonic. In 2010, she toured China with the Beethoven Violin Concerto, playing with the Qingdao, Hunan, and Lanzhou Symphony Orchestras. Since then, invitations to play with other major orchestras in China have resulted in successful annual tours. More recent concerts in Europe include a Tchaikovsky Concerto in Zurich and recitals in the Netherlands that were broadcast live on NPO Radio 4.

Born into a family of musicians, Tracy Bu began her musical studies in piano and violin. As an active musician from a young age, she participated in and won many competitions both locally and nationally in both piano and violin before deciding at age 13 to concentrate on the violin. Notably, she took first prize at the Alexander & Buono International String Competition in 2009, which resulted in her Carnegie Hall debut at age 17.

Tracy Bu graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Music where she studied violin with David Updegraff and chamber music with Peter Salaff. Prior to CIM, she studied under Weiwei Le at the University of Las Vegas. Having moved to Switzerland in 2016, she studied with Rudolf Koelman and received her Master’s degree at the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste (ZHdK) in 2018. Currently, she is a candidate for the coveted Soloist Diploma at the ZHdK, working with Anna Gebert. Past teachers she has worked with include Kegong Zhang, Ivry Gitlis, Aaron Rosand, Boris Kuschnir, Krzysztof Wegrzyn and Paul Kantor.

Tracy currently plays in various orchestras and projects including the Bern Symphony Orchestra and Musikkollegium Winterthur alongside her studies in Zurich.
